How to Impress Your Boss at Business Events

Whether you’re new to the corporate world or a seasoned professional, you know that it takes more than a strong resume to impress your boss or even a team member. Often, what you do at work reflects your character and personal style, and how you present yourself is more important than your industry-related knowledge.

Take this scenario into consideration. Perhaps you are in the midst of a new project or preparing for a major presentation. In such a situation, you might be expected to demonstrate your best skills to your boss or clients. You actually have the need to impress them.

Ways your boss can be impressed at business events:

  • Always be honest

Being honest is probably the best way to impress people. But it may not always work well in the world of business. Find the grey area of staying truthful to your boss in the most diplomatic way possible. The slightest slip of the tongue on certain matters can hurt your career. If you can learn how to impress your boss positively, you can effectively maintain relationships with them by staying true to yourself.

  • Learn to manage work pressure

It’s an amazing feeling to have that first promotion. But there’s a lot of work to be done when you’re at the next level of your career, which means more meetings, more calls, and more presentations. But you have to remember that you’re not the only one who’s under pressure. Your boss is also under a lot of pressure, and if you do not manage the work, he might be assuming that you are not taking the job seriously.

  • Dress to impress

It’s no secret that business meetings oftentimes go better when you’re dressed in something that makes you look good. And, most of the time, dressing to impress at work is something we can’t afford to do. Gather all the power-wearing suits and dresses you can find, because you need to look your best for this one.

  • Help out

When you walk into a business event, the last thing you want to do is make your company look bad. Although most people don’t realize it, a business event is one of the best ways to make a professional first impression. You don’t want people to think you’re a typical employee—someone that is lazy or doesn’t take their job seriously. You should strive to be the best employee or consultant there.

  • Arrive a few minutes early

Arriving a little early at business events is a great way to impress your boss. The events can give you a platform to showcase your management skills. Reaching early can give you ample time to participate in the event and help them with the organization, which will naturally impress your boss.

  • Don’t let the boss know you’re nervous

Remember, you don’t want to act nervous, but you also don’t want to appear too confident. If you’re getting a bit nervous, don’t let your boss know it. If you feel confident, ensure that you don’t make it seem like you are over-performing and don’t deserve the award. Think of it as a game of poker. If you’re showing your cards, you’re giving away your hand.

As an employee, it doesn’t matter if you’re an accountant, a salesperson, or a manager; you have to make sure you’re always prepared for your next meeting. Yes, the value of a good impression is important at work. Paying attention to every important thing happening around the event can increase your chances of success. Usually, it all starts with how you present yourself.
